gotta break up a # of willamette...

Postby mordantly » Tue Mar 09, 2010 5:06 am

i don't have one of those fancy mason jar attachments to vacuum seal them yet. any ideas how i can store this pound of willamette once i open it? my fat tire has been on hold waaaaay to long now. but i don't want to waste my good hops oxidizing them. i was thinking filling the mason than pumping co2 on top of the pellets.

I have some hops left over that I bought over a year ago, and they still smell and look great. I just keep them frozen in the fridge in a regular zip lock bag. You can buy one of those relatively inexpensive Reynolds food lock pump/bag combos, but they don't work nearly as well as the Food Saver systems.

I've seen people do the Mason Jar thing with hops. They seem to be happy with it.

update: my metal lid with an aquarium check valve worked for no longer than an hour.. couldn't get the lid-valve to seal without some permanent means (epoxy). so i'm using freezer zip locks with a minor vacuum prior to closure with fairly good results.

I usually just put them in a zip lock bag, suck all the air out, and stick it in the freezer. And by suck all the air out I mean literally zip the thing 9/10's of the way closed and suck the air out with my mouth and then close it. Yeah, it sounds stupid, but I haven't had an issue with it yet.

thats how i seal every zip lock baggie... and it has been what i do with the freezer models with my hops in em.. even my first year harvest. so far so good. i haven't been able to get the adapter for mason jars at a price i want to pay, so i suck and i suck and i suck.

I roll mine really tightly in plastic food wrap, then put that into a ziplock bag. In the freezer it will keep a long time. I've had 2 yr old bags of hops kept this way that I'd forgotten about that were still nice and green and fragreant.
